- Meeting Industry Report Austria: Economic upturn for meetings sector
- Salzburg alongside Vienna as Austria’s most popular destination for events
- Clear trend toward larger events with greater numbers of participants

(03.05.2016, Salzburg/Vienna) - New record for Salzburg as a capital city for meetings and congresses. Last year saw Salzburg host over 3000 events for the first time – an increase of 9.4%. This confirms Salzburg’s status as the most popular county in Austria – after Vienna – for congresses, seminars and corporate gatherings, in terms of the number of events, participants and overnight stays. These facts were provided by the Meeting Industry Report Austria (MIRA) 2015, published by the Austrian Convention Bureau (ACB) and Austria National Tourist Office, the official advertising body of Austria.

“An increase of 10% on top of the excellent result achieved the previous year was very pleasing indeed”, declared Gernot Marx, Managing Director of Salzburg Convention Bureau (SCB), the organisation responsible for marketing the city and region of Salzburg as event destinations. “Our share of the Austrian congress, corporate meeting and seminar market is 16.5 %, giving us a clear lead over the counties behind us, such as Lower Austria (10.2%) and Upper Austria (8.2%). It underlines our claim to have the right range of options in the city and the county as a whole.”

Meeting participants generate more profit

Another key statistic in the Meeting Industry Report is the number of congress and meeting participants. Salzburg is up at the front of the field in this respect, too. “The trend is definitely moving towards larger events”, says Gernot Marx. “We now register twice as many participants at our events than other counties. This is, above all, of great significance to regional businesses, since congress participants tend to spend above average amounts of money.”

More than 350,000 overnight stays

In total, the 2015 report showed that over 207,000 participants attended congresses, business gatherings and seminars in the county of Salzburg. Of course, the growing number of domestic and foreign guests with plenty of money to spend is also reflected in the accommodation results. More than 350,000 overnight stays were registered last year. That’s something particularly beneficial to the city of Salzburg. The meetings industry generated 247,000 overnight stays and accounted for almost 10% of all tourist stays in the capital of the Salzburg region.
