Art and Culture in Salzburg

Salzburg - a fortunate combination of natural landscapes and architecture, tradition and innovation. Embedded between the city's mountains and the river Salzach, the home of the Salzburg Festival catches the eye of everyone who visits. The intensive building work directed by the powerful prince archbishops, who ruled over Salzburg until 1803, has left a lasting impression on the architecture of the city.
One of the most impressive witnesses of this period is the great fortress at the top of the Mönchsberg and Festungsberg mountains, whose silhouette defines the view of the city from a long way away. At ground level the tour of the old city through time reveals a centre with a uniquely cohesive character.
It's not without good reason that Salzburg was added to the UNESCO world cultural heritage list on the 1st January 1997. This inclusion is a very special honour, however it also commits the city to take care in its handling of this cultural heritage; a duty Salzburg is happy to fulfil.
