Architectural pearls

The large scale squares suggest an aura of Italian grandness and are all surrounded by sacral and secular constructions, such as the dome church or the archbishopric residencies and a number of aristocratic mansions reflecting the riches and influence of their onwers. The decorative centrepiece of these open spaces is usually an artful baroque fountain, a statue or a memorial from the various epochs. Right next to this generously proportioned section are the medieval lanes with their tall and narrow housing, small windows and Grabendächer roofing, so typical for Salzburg, all of which produces a pictures of how life in Salzburg once was.

A glance through the stern looking entrance gates of the city or down the passageways connection Salzburg's most famous street, the Getreidegasse, with the Universitätsplatz and the traditional market can open up an unexpected view of attractive marble decorated inner courtyarde with arcade walkways in the Venetian style and countless diminutive shops.
